Irish passport photo guide

Irish Passport Photo Requirements

Check the current Irish passport photo requirements for Passport Online and paper applications, prepare a crop-only digital photo when you need one, and verify the final photo against DFA guidance. This covers Ireland passport photo requirements, Irish passport photo guidelines and Irish passport photo rules for Republic of Ireland passport photo requirements and requirements for Irish passport photo submissions.

Ireland's DFA is the issuing authority. Its current photo guidance, application flow and manual review override this guide and any generated prepared photo.

AI-generated visual comparison, not an actual processing result. The Ireland preset requests a 715 × 951 px JPEG preview and keeps background replacement off. The Irish passport photo 715 x 951 pixels target is a minimum prepared photo, not a government approval size.

This crop-only tool prepares a 715 × 951 px minimum JPEG for the direct digital-upload route. It does not create a Photo Code or paper prints. This service handles the stated size and image processing only; final acceptance is decided by Ireland’s DFA.

Official-first guidance

Choose the official Irish application route first

Irish passport photo requirements cover more than pixels. The Ireland preset solves one technical output target, but the Irish passport process checks the exact DFA route and the original source.

  • 715 × 951 px is a minimum digital pixel target for this prepared photo, not a universal fixed finished size for every route.
  • DFA passport photo guidance does not publish a fixed face-percentage rule to substitute for its framing instructions.
  • Generic photo editors do not create a Photo Code, 4 paper prints or witness certification.
  • A technical checker result or generated output is not DFA final approval. The official system and passport staff make the final assessment.

Start with the route

Choose the right Irish passport photo workflow

Digital upload, Photo Code and paper applications use different deliverables. Searches for passport photo Ireland, Ireland passport picture or Irish passport picture still need this route distinction before you choose a photo size.

  1. Step 01

    Passport Online digital upload

Prepare a recent colour JPEG for the online application. The file must meet the current pixel and file-size limits, and it must be an original natural image rather than a scan or digitally enhanced portrait. Follow the DFA upload checks before submitting.

  2. Step 02

Passport Online with a Photo Code

Get a Photo Code through a participating photo provider listed or accepted by the official process. Follow the provider and DFA instructions for linking the digital photo to your application. A downloadable photo from this page is not a Photo Code.

  3. Step 03

    Paper passport application

Use 4 recent passport photos within the official printed range. Check the current form for witness details and the required information on the back of 2 photographs. Do not substitute a generic digital file for the required paper-photo route.

Size and format

Irish Passport Photo Size and Dimensions

For Irish passport photo requirements, keep the digital file, Photo Code and paper deliverables separate. The receiving route determines which row applies, because Irish passport photo dimensions, passport photo dimensions Ireland applicants need and Ireland passport photo size are not one universal paper measurement.

The 715 × 951 px output is a minimum prepared photo target for the online digital route. It is not a paper-photo preset, a Photo Code and not a promise that the official upload will accept the image.

Rules beyond pixels

Irish Passport Photo Rules for Capture and Appearance

A correct file size cannot repair a weak source photo. Prepare the capture first, then use the digital or paper route that matches your application.

Ask another person to take the photo rather than using a selfie. Keep the camera at eye level and far enough away to avoid wide-angle distortion. Include the head, shoulders and surrounding space in the original so the route can preserve a natural likeness.

Use a plain, evenly lit background in a light neutral colour such as light grey, white or beige. Avoid shadows, background objects and strong contrast problems. The background should be part of the original capture, not replaced after the fact.

Irish passport guidance does not provide a single face-percentage formula that replaces the full instructions. Do not import the 70–80% rule from an Irish visa page or another country. Keep the face centred, recognisable and unobstructed, then check the current DFA wording. Irish passport photo background requirements also begin with a plain, evenly lit original background rather than a replacement edit.

Before you upload or print

  • Use a sharp, naturally coloured photo with no blur, red-eye or compression damage.
  • Keep the head straight and centred, with a clear gap around the hair and enough space above the head.
  • Check that both eyes and the full face are visible, with no glare, heavy shadow or background object.
  • Keep the original file and transfer it without messaging-app compression or repeated re-exports.
  • Do not use filters, beauty mode, generative fill or edits that change the applicant's appearance.

Camera distance, light and background

Illustrative camera, lights and background setup for an Irish passport source photo
Illustrative setup only. Use the written DFA guidance for the current route and final capture.

Place the applicant in front of a plain light background and use soft, even light across the face. Ask another person to hold the camera parallel to the face at eye level. Several source captures make it easier to select one without a blink, tilt or hard shadow.

  • Remove visible furniture, people, toys and other objects from the background.
  • Keep the applicant away from the background so a cast shadow does not appear behind the head.
  • Use a stable camera and avoid the close perspective of a selfie.

Face, expression and framing

Illustrative comparison of common passport photo pose, shadow, glare and quality problems
General educational comparison, not an official Irish DFA acceptance sample.

Face the camera directly with the head level. Keep a neutral expression and a closed mouth unless the official instructions for a child exception say otherwise. The source should show the whole head and a natural amount of the upper body rather than a tight crop against the hairline.

  • Keep hair from covering the eyes or hiding the outline of the face.
  • Avoid tilting, turning, leaning or placing the face too close to the camera.
  • Do not treat a fixed percentage as an Irish passport rule when the DFA page does not publish one.

Irish Passport Photo Requirements: Hair, Glasses and Head Coverings

If glasses are worn, the eyes must remain clearly visible and the lenses must not create reflections. Remove sunglasses. Hair should not cover the eyes. A head covering may be used for religious or medical reasons when the full face remains visible and the current official guidance is followed.

  • Move the light or remove glasses if there is glare across either eye.
  • Do not let thick frames, tinted lenses or hair hide the eyes or facial outline.
  • Do not use a hat or fashion headwear as a substitute for an accepted religious or medical covering.

Colour, natural likeness and photo age

The online digital file must be colour. For paper applications, black and white is recommended while colour is accepted. That paper preference does not mean you should convert the online JPEG to black and white. Use a recent photo and make sure it still looks like the applicant.

  • Do not scan a printed photo for the digital route.
  • Do not reshape features, smooth skin, remove marks or replace the background digitally.
  • Keep the source and final file available in case the route asks you to correct a technical issue.

A generic photo editor cannot prove that the source photo is natural, recent, evenly lit or acceptable to DFA. Use the current official upload checks.

From camera to submission

How to Prepare and Submit an Irish Passport Photo

Follow the sequence for the route you selected, preserving the original source and checking the exact official instructions before submission.

01 / 05

Confirm the application route

Decide whether you are using Passport Online with a direct upload, Passport Online with a Photo Code, or a paper passport application. Open the current DFA page or application form for that route before taking or editing the photo.

  • For direct digital upload, prepare an original natural JPEG that meets the current DFA limits.
  • Use an accepted provider for a Photo Code and the current paper form for printed-photo and witness instructions.

02 / 05

Take several natural source photos

Ask someone else to take the photo at eye level with even light, a plain light background and enough distance to prevent distortion. Select the sharpest image with a neutral expression, visible eyes and room around the head.

  • Keep the mouth closed and the head straight unless an official child exception applies.
  • Turn off beauty filters, portrait retouching and automatic appearance enhancement.
  • Save the original colour file before any crop or export.

03 / 05

Create and inspect the digital photo

If you are submitting a direct digital upload, upload the original source to the Ireland preset above. It requests a 715 × 951 px JPEG crop and does not request background replacement. Compare the preview with the original before paying or downloading.

  • Reject a preview that cuts into the hair, changes the face or removes the needed surrounding space.
  • Confirm the downloaded file is colour JPEG, at least 715 × 951 px and no more than 9 MB.
  • Keep both the original and the final JPG.

04 / 05

Complete Passport Online or use the Photo Code

Use the official Passport Online application to upload and validate the final digital file, or enter the Photo Code supplied by an accepted provider. A generated preview or successful technical check is preparation evidence only; continue through the official application steps.

  • Upload the applicant's own final image, not another person's file or a previous photo.
  • Do not assume a generic photo editor's 715 × 951 target is the Photo Code provider's delivery contract.
  • Follow any correction or review message from the official application.

05 / 05

Prepare the paper set and witness details

For a paper application, obtain 4 recent photos within the official 35 × 45 mm to 38 × 50 mm range. Check the current form for printing quality and the information that a witness must complete on the back of 2 photos.

  • Use the paper route's recommended black and white finish, while remembering that colour is accepted.
  • Do not print a digital maker preview without checking its physical measurement and print quality.
  • Keep the photos identical and complete the witness step exactly as the current form states.

If the official flow rejects the photo, do not keep reprocessing the same output. Return to the original capture, correct the physical problem or contact DFA through the official support route.

Avoid repeat attempts

Common Irish Passport Photo and Upload Failures

Use the problem, impact and next action together. Fix the source or route rather than stacking edits on a rejected file.

Problem: 01. Using a selfie

Why it matters: A close, angled camera can distort facial features and leave too little space around the head.

What to do: Ask another person to take the photo with the camera at eye level and enough distance.

Problem: 02. The digital file is below 715 × 951 px or exceeds 9 MB

Why it matters: The online upload does not meet the current technical minimum or maximum.

What to do: Return to the original source and export a colour JPEG at or above the minimum, then check the byte size before upload.

Problem: 03. Using PNG, a non-JPEG export or a black-and-white online file

Why it matters: The online route expects a colour JPEG; paper colour guidance must not be copied into the digital route.

What to do: Export the natural source as a colour JPEG and use the official upload validator.

Problem: 04. Uploading a scan of a printed photo

Why it matters: A scan can introduce shadows, print texture, blur and colour shifts instead of preserving an original digital capture.

What to do: Use the original camera file or obtain the correct digital delivery from an accepted provider.

Problem: 05. Filters, beauty mode, AI retouching or background replacement

Why it matters: Digital changes can alter the applicant's natural likeness and are not a substitute for correcting the capture.

What to do: Start again from the unedited source. Keep background replacement off and remove appearance-enhancing edits.

Problem: 06. Head or hair is cropped too tightly

Why it matters: The full head and natural surrounding space may not be visible for reliable identification.

What to do: Return to a wider original capture and recrop without cutting into the hair or top of the head.

Problem: 07. The image is rotated or the head is tilted

Why it matters: The face is no longer presented straight and consistently for the official review.

What to do: Use a correctly oriented original and take another photo with the head level.

Problem: 08. The browser or upload screen fails

Why it matters: A network, browser or stale-session issue can look like a bad photo even when the file is valid.

What to do: Save the original, retry the official flow in a current browser, check the file locally and follow DFA support instructions if it continues.

Problem: 09. Uploading the wrong person's photo

Why it matters: The application must contain the applicant's own image; a technically valid file for someone else is still invalid.

What to do: Stop and restart with the correct original file. Check the name and preview before submitting.

Problem: 10. Repeated official rejection

Why it matters: Repeatedly processing the same source does not fix a physical pose, lighting, likeness or route problem.

What to do: Read the exact rejection message, retake the source photo or contact DFA through its official support channel.

Problem: 11. Hard shadows or objects in the background

Why it matters: Uneven light and background distractions reduce clarity and can trigger review problems.

What to do: Move away from the wall, use softer even light and remove every visible object or person.

Problem: 12. Glare, tinted lenses or eyes hidden by hair

Why it matters: The eyes and full face cannot be checked reliably when they are obscured.

What to do: Adjust the light, remove glasses when necessary and move hair away from the eyes before retaking the photo.

Pixel dimensions alone cannot certify natural appearance, recency, route eligibility or DFA acceptance.

Children and special cases

Irish Passport Photo Requirements: Child Guide and Exceptions

Use the current DFA child and exception instructions for the applicant's age and circumstances. These notes help you prepare the source without replacing the official decision.

Babies and children

  • A baby may lie on a plain white surface while photographed from above, provided the full face is visible.
  • Do not show another person, supporting hands, toys, a bottle, a dummy or other objects in the frame.
  • For newborn to 36 months, use the Irish passport photo cropping tool—the official manual crop tool—only when the Passport Online system prompts you to do so.
  • Follow the dedicated infant guide as well as the current Ireland DFA instructions.

Glasses and hair

  • Prescription glasses may be worn when the eyes are fully visible and the lenses have no glare.
  • Never use sunglasses or tinted lenses that hide the eyes.
  • Keep hair away from the eyes and facial outline; remove glare or change the light before retaking the photo.

Religious or medical head coverings

  • Use a head covering only for a recognised religious or medical reason under the official guidance.
  • Keep the entire face visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead where the current guidance requires it.
  • Do not add fashion hats or accessories that are not required for the exception.

Do not apply a visa rule or another country's child percentage to an Irish passport application. The issuing authority's current child flow takes precedence.
