Indian Passport Photo Requirements

Create a 630 × 810 px digital photo below. Current supplied-print routes use 35 × 45 mm. Indian passport photo requirements differ for overseas uploads, printed photos and passport-centre capture.

Official guidance checked 26 August 2026. Your receiving passport office and its current checklist determine acceptance.

Create an Indian Passport Photo

Upload a recent portrait against a real white background. The India preset requests a 630 × 810 px JPG, with a maximum file-size target of 250,000 bytes. Automatic background replacement is switched off.

This tool prepares a digital photo, not an official compliance certificate. Check the downloaded file size, natural appearance and your application checklist before submitting. For paper photos, explicitly print at 35 × 45 mm; do not rely on the file's DPI setting. The sample portraits are illustrative. This service handles the stated size and image processing only; final acceptance is decided by the issuing authority.

Before submitting

Indian passport photo requirements depend on the application route

The generator uses the current 7:9 digital format. It does not replace the receiving office's photo assessment or change the way a passport centre captures your photograph.

  • Use the overseas digital instructions when your application asks for a photo upload.
  • If your checklist requests prints, set the printed image to 35 × 45 mm and check it with a ruler.
  • The older 2 × 2 inch instructions are not the default for the current VFS USA reissue checklist.
  • Correct dimensions alone cannot fix blur, shadows, an obscured face or an outdated photograph.

Start with your application route

Choose the instructions that match where and how you apply before preparing a file or ordering prints.

  1. Step 01

Applying at a PSK or POPSK in India

Ordinary applications use photography at the centre. Do not buy a digital file solely because an overseas checklist requires one. Check your appointment instructions for any exception.

  2. Step 02

A child below four in India

Bring the recent 35 × 45 mm colour photograph described in the dedicated Passport Seva child guidance. Follow that document's white-background and open-eye requirements.

  3. Step 03

    Applying through an overseas mission

Where the current portal requests an upload, prepare the specified digital file. The linked government guidance uses 630 × 810 px; check the mission's checklist for any additional paper photographs.

  4. Step 04

Renewing through VFS in the USA

The current adult reissue checklist asks for two identical 35 × 45 mm photographs and a photo and signature upload on the government portal. Use the current checklist rather than an old downloaded copy.

The Indian passport photo size in cm is 3.5 × 4.5 for the current 35 × 45 mm paper routes above. The 630 × 810 digital file has the same 7:9 shape, but printing it at its embedded DPI does not automatically produce that physical size.

Indian passport photo guidelines for a clear source portrait

Prepare the photograph before you crop it. A correctly sized file can still be unsuitable when the original image has lighting or appearance problems.

Use a recent colour photograph that represents your current appearance. Ask someone else to take it at eye level instead of holding the camera close to your face. Keep the original file so you can compare the result and start again without repeated editing.

Check before uploading

  • Use a real, plain white background with no visible objects or shadows.
  • Keep the full head and upper shoulders visible and face the camera directly.
  • Keep eyes clearly visible and avoid reflections, blur and red-eye.

Lighting, background and clothing

Use even light across the face and background. Move away from the wall if it creates a dark shadow. Choose clothing that remains distinct against white; the current USA checklist asks for a coloured shirt. If the portrait is blurred or unevenly lit, retake it instead of trying to conceal the problem.

Expression, glasses and head coverings

Use a natural expression, open eyes and a closed mouth. The current VFS USA checklist says no glasses. Religious head coverings must leave the face clearly visible and must not cast shadows. Hair should not cover the eyes.

Cropping is not a compliance check

Indian passport photo requirements include more than frame size. Government guidance warns against software alteration, while the Wellington mission also describes technical cropping and sizing. Follow your own mission's instructions, avoid beauty filters or face reshaping, and do not treat any automatic result as official approval.

  • This preset requests the existing crop workflow with background replacement disabled.
  • It does not verify photo age, every facial proportion or the receiving office's decision.

Indian passport renewal photo requirements and upload steps

Use the current application checklist throughout. These steps explain preparation; they do not reproduce a logged-in portal screen that may change.

01 / 04

1. Confirm the receiving office

Open the current Passport Seva or mission instructions and the checklist for your application type. Keep digital upload, paper photos and signature upload as separate items. A passport photo guide for an Indian visa or OCI application is not a substitute.

02 / 04

2. Capture and create the digital photo

Start with a sharp, front-facing portrait against white. Upload it to the generator above to request the 630 × 810 px crop. Check that the crop retains the head and shoulders and does not introduce an unnatural appearance.

03 / 04

3. Inspect the downloaded file

Use the final JPG rather than the watermarked preview or a screenshot. Check its actual dimensions and file size in the file properties. The generator requests a 250,000-byte maximum, but the exact downloaded result and portal response must still be checked. Keep a copy of the original photo.

04 / 04

4. Upload and prepare any prints

To upload a photo for Indian passport renewal, open the official government application for your mission, follow its photograph and signature prompts, and review the saved application. If prints are required, print the final image at 35 × 45 mm and check the count and placement in the current checklist.

  • Do not stretch a square photo into the 7:9 frame.
  • Do not assume an upload success message is final passport approval.

Indian passport photo requirements for newborn applicants

The child's age and application location matter. Do not import an infant exception from a different country or an older general document.

India: below four years

  • Passport Seva provides a dedicated supplied-photo guide for this age group.
  • Use the requested 35 × 45 mm colour photo and white background.
  • That guide calls for open, clearly visible eyes and a front-facing photograph.

Applying overseas

  • Use the mission's current minor or first-passport checklist.
  • Do not assume that a baby may close their eyes merely because an older general PDF says so.
  • Ask the receiving office about any age-specific exception that its current instructions do not resolve.

The infant guide linked below offers additional capture advice. Indian passport photo requirements for the actual application always take precedence over general baby-photography tips.

Common problems before submission

Use the error message and original photograph to decide what to correct. Repeated compression cannot fix a poorly captured portrait.

Problem: 01. Using an old square template

Why it matters: A 2 × 2 inch image does not match the current 7:9 digital upload shape.

Next step: Use 630 × 810 px for the specified digital route; check the receiving checklist for paper requirements.

Problem: 02. Treating a preview as the final photo

Why it matters: Watermarks, screenshots and resaved previews can change the file or add unwanted content.

Next step: Download the final file and check that exact file before uploading.

Problem: 03. Correct pixels, unsuitable portrait

Why it matters: Blur, reflections, shadows or covered features remain visible after resizing.

Next step: Retake the source photo when capture quality is the problem.

Problem: 04. Printing at an automatic size

Why it matters: The image can have the right proportions but the wrong physical dimensions.

Next step: Set 35 × 45 mm in the print layout and measure the output; do not use fit-to-page.

Your next step

Prepare the photo, then verify your submission

Create the digital photo above, then use your receiving office's current checklist to review the final file. The infant photo guide offers additional capture advice, but the rules for your Indian application take precedence.

A generated image is a preparation aid. Only the passport authority can accept the photograph.
